Flow cytometry (from the greek words cyto = cell and metry = measure) is a powerful technique that can provide us with information about the properties of cells (morphology, cellular properties, cell cycle stage, etc.). Its great advantage lies on the potential to analyze individual cells in a population without averaging). Moreover, FACS, a version of flow cytometry, enables the isolation of the populations of interest for subsequent analysis. Recent development in image analysis software has enabled quantification of immunofluorescence data similar to flow cytometry data, which can overcome the necessity that cells need to be in suspension in flow cytometry.
