Waist support has been shown to be beneficial in a number of ways, including helping to correct posture, supporting core muscles during activities, and assisting with weight loss. However, it’s important to remember that waist belts shouldn’t be used as a substitute for proper body mechanics, regular exercise, and proper nutrition. This is especially true when it comes to exercises like weightlifting, where waist belts can actually be harmful when used improperly.
Generally speaking, the majority of people who use waist support are trying to combat back pain or improve their posture. Slouching or having poor posture can be extremely detrimental to the spine and neck, leading to a variety of injuries. By gently compressing the abdomen, waist supports can help to prevent this slouching by encouraging the body to stay in a more natural position. This, in turn, can reduce the risk of strains, back pain, and other musculoskeletal problems.
In three studies (954 people), there was little or no difference in short-term pain reduction, overall improvement, or return-to-work between those who used lumbar supports and those who received other types of treatment for LBP (Coxhead 1981; Doran 1975; Hsieh 1992). These three trials compared corsets with traction, manipulation, and exercises, while one study compared corsets with physiotherapy and electrical stimulation.
A fourth trial (280 people) compared waist supports to a standard sham support. In this study, there was a small but significant reduction in the duration of sick leave due to back pain between those who used the waist support and those who didn’t. However, the researchers noted that the effect was only temporary and not consistent.
Only four of the 15 studies reported on compliance. It is important to note that compliance is critical to determining the effectiveness of any intervention, and it should be considered when evaluating the quality of a study.
Some users have reported discomfort from wearing waist supports over the long term, and many have experienced muscle atrophy from using them too often. In addition, the compression of the abdomen may lead to gastrointestinal issues. As a result, it is recommended that waist supports be worn only for brief periods of time and not for lengthy workouts.
